Matías Undergoes Life-Saving Surgery

young boy with treacher collins syndrome hugs his mama in their tiny home

Dr. Fajardo, the only specialist in Mexico trained to complete the necessary complex surgery, evaluated Matías. Timing for this life-saving reconstructive surgery is crucial. Matías is ready for the surgery and passed his initial physical evaluation.

Our partners, Red de Ciudadanos de Mérida, worked tirelessly in the past few months to arrange the surgery and cover the medical costs. Thankfully, the Unidad Médica de Altas Especialidades La Raza hospital, located in Mexico City, authorized Matías’ first surgery at no charge. The first appointment is on January 30, 2023. Clinicians will perform pre-op studies such as an EKG, axial tomography, skull and paranasal fossa x-rays, and labs to determine blood levels. The second appointment is admission to the hospital the night before the surgery, on February 8.

The doctor expects Matías to remain in the hospital for recovery for 15 to 20 days. If there is a good recovery, the second surgery could be performed during the same stay. Otherwise, Matías will need to return in April for the second surgery. Matías and his mama will need to travel by bus this time to avoid the change in air pressure. He will need to arrive in Mexico City by January 27 so that he can become accustomed to the altitude. Philip Hayden Foundation will provide some transportation and daily living expenses for Matías and his Mama. Will you help Matías today?
