600 Bananas…and a Whole Lot of Hope

Tim and Pam Baker are now living in Yucatán, Mexico. Just outside bigger cities are areas of extreme poverty, where families struggle to survive. In July, Tim met Dr. Eder Abreu, a physician with a heart for providing medical care to those who cannot afford to visit a doctor. Through his nonprofit, Red de Ciudadanos de Mérida, Dr. Abreu provides free medical care to the community monthly. When Tim asked how PHF could help, Eder said, “Can you provide 600 bananas and 600 boxes of milk for our medical outreach?”

You see, many of the families that seek medical care are hungry. This is an excellent opportunity to meet a tangible need and build trust. PHF did more than provide bananas and milk – we also purchased bread, meat, cheese and mayonnaise for 600 sandwiches. This small act of kindness encouraged the medical workers who volunteered their time and the families seeking medical care. Many new friendships were made through this outreach.
